Berberis × carminea Ahrendt

Article sources

Bean

Under this collective name Dr Ahrendt has grouped a number of named seedlings that show the influence of B. aggregata in their paniculate inflorescence and are probably the result of the chance crossing of that species with other Chinese barberries such as B. wilsoniae var. subcauliata and with members of the section Angulosae (Journ. R.H.S., Vol. 67, p. 132). Here belong the tall and vigorous 'Barbarossa', 'Buccaneer', and 'Pirate King': dwarfer in habit are 'Bountiful' and 'Sparkler'. All are reliable berrying shrubs, in which the bright red fruits are enhanced by vivid autumn colour.

From the Supplement (Vol. V)

It has been suggested that this group should be united with B. × rubrostilla, but this would be inadvisable. See further under the latter in this supplement.
