Article sources

Bean

A genus of one species allied to Philadelphus, from which it differs in its evergreen leaves, single style and superior ovary.

From the Supplement (Vol. V)

C. californica does not take kindly to training, and the best place for it is one where it can grow freely, receiving the protection of a wall but not tied to it. Its worst fault is that it becomes shabby after flowering, with its withered old leaves and inflorescences. It has been found that soft-wooded cuttings taken as early as possible in the season are the best material for propagation.
