A genus of seventeen species scattered through N. and Central America, E. Asia, and Africa. Only the N. American species described here is cultivated in the British Isles and is one of the few hardy woody species in the family Rubiaceae; others are Mitchella repens, Emmenopterys henryi, and some of the coprosmas. By some authorities, Cephalanthus and nine other genera of Rubiaceae are grouped in a separate family – Naucleaceae.
