Chimonanthus is the counterpart in China of the N. American genus Calycanthus. The leaves and wood lack, however, the spicy fragrance of that genus; the stamens are only five to six in number and the flowers are coloured yellow to white. Calycanthus has up to thirty stamens in each flower and the tepals are purplish brown. Three species of Chimonanthus are known, all natives of China.
