A genus of a single species in western North America belonging to the same subdivision of the Philadelphus family as Carpentaria and Fendlera. It is named after Dr Edwin James, who first found it in 1820; he was then acting as botanist and historian to Major Long’s expedition to the Rocky Mountains.
