A genus of a single species in E. Asia. Although usually placed in the Berberidaceae, it is considered by some botanists to be sufficiently distinct and taxonomically isolated to rank as a separate family – the Nandinaceae – differing from the Berberidaceae in having flowers with numerous spirally arranged sepals and anthers opening by longitudinal slits.

The Japanese name for this species is ‘Nanten’ – hence Nandina.
