A small, sparsely branched, stout-stemmed low shrub, usually growing as an epiphyte in the wild. Leaves orbicular, 1 to 2 in. wide, cordate at the base, shallowly three- or five-lobed, toothed, downy or glabrous above, downy and glandular beneath. Flowers bisexual, greenish, paired, on pedicels 316 to 38 in. long, each furnished with a pair of bracteoles near the apex; sepals oblong-elliptic, spreading to erect. Fruits glandular bristly, broadly ellipsoid, containing numerous small seeds.

Native of central and southern Japan, where it grows on trees in mountain forests. An interesting small shrub for a cool, sheltered position in leafy soil.
