'Ample Surprise'

RHS Hardiness Rating: H5

A selection discovered by acerologist Piet de Jong, and introduced to cultivation in 2013, ‘Ample Surprise’ has red new growth which later turns a bronze green, before turning scarlet and orange in autumn (Pieroni Dante 2019; Bluebell Arboretum 2020). Tolerant of full sun and partial shade in well drained soils, it is of compact form though it can reach up to 4 m tall and wide (Pieroni Dante 2019). It is also suitable for growth in a pot (Pieroni Dante 2019).
