A genus of about 250 deciduous and evergreen species almost wholly confined to tropical and subtropical regions. The majority are climbers, but some are inhabitants of desert regions, with succulent roots and herbaceous stems, or with stout, fleshy trunks. By far the best known member of the genus is the common house-plant Cissus antarctica, a native of New South Wales.
