A very ornamental feature of Heptacodium is that the calyx turns red after the corolla has fallen, extending the season of interest. The effect seems to be most intense in warmer climates, as here at Montrose, Hillsborough, North Carolina (October 2008). Image John Grimshaw.
The genus Heptacodium contains one important and attractive large shrub, H. miconioides, under which it is described. A much more detailed account of the genus (Grimshaw 2012) is also available on the IDS website.
