A group of hybrids between M. × purpurea ‘Lemoinei’ and M. toringo raised in the Netherlands before 1938 by Simon Doorenbos, Director of The Hague Parks Department, pigeon fancier, and founder member of the International Dendrology Society. They inherit the intense flower colour and pigmented foliage of M. × purpurea (Fiala 1994). The following two cultivars have been among the most successful rosybloom crabs.


'Liset'

Highly regarded for its flower and fruit quality, a good landscape crab considered an improvement on its parent M. × purpurea ‘Lemoinei’.

'Profusion'

A classic and popular crab apple, well named for its profuse pink blossom. M. ‘Directeur Moerlands’ (syn. ‘Profusion Improved’) is similar but more disease resistant, and has a slightly more lobed leaf.
