A genus of over 100 species of climbers in Central and South America, named in honour of H. J. Mandeville, who introduced the species described below, which is the type-species of the genus. Mandevilla belongs to the subfamily Apocynoideae, in which the stamens are united to the head of the style by a viscid substance, and the connective between the anthers is prolonged into a spiny tip. In Vinca and Trachelospermum, which belong to the subfamily Plumerioideae, this peculiarity is absent.
