A genus of one deciduous species in the south-eastern United States. From its allies Ulmus, Celtis and Zelkova, the first of which it resembles in foliage, it differs in the nut-like tubercled fruit. The genus is named after J. J. Planer, a German physician (1743–1789).
The specimen of P. aquatica in the Home Park at Windsor is dead.
